Boxelder Burl

Bocote wood sample

Fine writing instruments demand the best in body and component materials. Boxelder burl is another in a series of exotic wood reviews that disclose critical and interesting information supporting  the use of this wood for that purpose. A weaving of background, characteristics, fascinating stories, and personal notes accomplish this objective.

While boxelder burl describes a specific wood, it is essential to understand that boxelder is a species of wood (Acer negundo ) while burl is a condition of wood that can be associated with other species. The two names are combined to describe the unique combination that represent this exotic wood.

Burl describes a condition of wood that is knotted and contorted within the tree it is found. Authorities differ in their theories regarding the causes of this burl condition. Presumptions include insect infestation, fungus, or genetics. The burl portion of a tree is highly decorative and thus prized by artisans for its beautiful irregularities.

Boxelder is a maple species found in the Eastern United States and South Central Canada. It is one of the lighter maples with a specific gravity of less than .5. It is a prolific species that has a short life span. Multiple trunks are typical and diameters can grow to 2.5 feet. Heights rarely exceed 60 feet.

There is a bug associated with this tree, known as the boxelder bug. The bugs feed on the leaves of the boxelder in spring and early summer. in July, the females are attracted to the female boxelder trees to lay their eggs. The bugs use the boxelder tree as their temporary home but are not known to cause damage to the tree.

Boxelder displays light colors throughout its grain with variations ranging from cream to light brown. Swirling grain patterns and sharp, irregular changes are the hallmark of the boxelder burl. These colors and variations are dramatic and pleasing to the eye when combined with either the dark or light component plating options offered in custom crafted pens.

In terms of artisans working with this wood, it is critical to have sharp cutting tools, especially when encountering the burl sections of the wood. My own experience is that valuable pieces can easily be lost to splitting and tearing unless sharp tools and thin passes are made across the turning stock. An interesting documentary on crafting luxury writing instruments helps to illustrate the process.

Overall, boxelder burl is an excellent choice for use in luxury hand crafted pens. A review of its important characteristics include being light weight, having a pleasing color with dramatic burl variations, and suitability for use with a large selection of component plating options. Consider this exotic wood when designing or choosing your next luxury writing instrument.
